Bowel Urgency and Faecal Incontinence

There are few worse feelings than that sense you are not going to make it in time.

Urgency with the bladder is bad enough, but the bowel? The fear and dread of messing yourself is one anyone who has experienced this can identify with.

Some people get urgency with the bowel, but luckily, have never had an accident. Others experience that dreaded loss of control of the bowels occasionally or even frequently, up to several times a day.

Medical conditions clearly need to be ruled out here. Anything that loosens the stools can make it very difficult to ‘’get there in time’’, and possibilities include:

  • Gastroenteritis
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (e.g. Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis)
  • Coeliac Disease
  • Bowel cancer
  • Diverticulitis
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Food intolerances or sensitivities
  • Fructose or FODMAPs malabsorption
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

If you are having bowel urgency, especially when the stools are not particularly loose, you probably need help with the control of the ‘’sphincter muscle’’ around the anus as well, to regain your control.

Don’t be embarrassed. It is so important to speak up to get the right diagnosis and management. If you have IBS, food sensitivities or FODMAPs issues, Equilibria can provide the right nutritional management to help solve your problem. If you have a pelvic floor or ‘’sphincter muscle control’’ problem, we have the expertise to help you get your control back.
